The Biological Sciences Division – Facilities Services (BSD-FS) office provides support the University’s medical, research, and education missions. We are responsible for managing approximately 6 million gross feet of space located on the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus. We serve many community members including but not limited to: Senior administration, academic,  research and clinical faculty, laboratory / administrative staff, residents, undergraduate students and post-doctoral scholars.

BSD-FS consists of the following major functional areas of responsibility:

 

1) Project Management - Planning, Design and Construction and Procurement,

2) Building Management,

3) Space Planning and Management,

4) Capital and Strategic Planning,

5) Lease Management,

6) Architectural Services,

7) Signage Services,

8) Furniture Services, and

9) Facilities Information Technology

 

1) Project Management - Planning, Design and Construction, 

The Project Management team facilitates renovation and infrastructure projects, as well as major new construction. We work with external vendors (architects, engineers, and general contractors) and internal partners (including Finance, Procurement, Compliance, IT Services, Physical Plant, Environmental Health & Safety and Building Managers) to meet each project's requirements.

2) Building Management

Operations oversee the daily functions of our facilities with a wide range of services, including Safety and Environmental Compliance, Physical Plant, BSD Campus Management, Multi-Media, Special Events, and more.

3) Space Planning and Management, 

Our Architectural, Facility Planning & Design group provides an array of services for the Biological Sciences Division’s faculty and staff, including.

4) Capital and Strategic Planning, 

Develops solutions for facility needs that are well-designed (both from the user and building systems perspectives), to meet all programmatic objectives, comply with regulations and facility standards, and fit within the Divisions master and capital planning process.

5) Lease Management, 

BSD Lease management provides non-clinical lease services and project management services to customers at the University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences, including budget guidance for external facilities, maintenance of lease data, and coordination with building and property managers.

6) Architectural Services, 

BSD Architectural Services assists in the coordination of vendor architects and their interface with user groups within the BSD.   We help guide the architects and users through the typical AE process and ensure that their efforts are coordinated within the guidelines and standards which exist within the University of Chicago.

7) Signage Service,

A coherent and consistent sign system is essential to the creation of a visually unified urban campus. We provide standards and specifications to satisfy several interrelated objectives for interior and exterior signage within the BSD/UCM.

8) Furniture Services

We offer free in-house design services and budget integration for the purchase of Herman Miller furniture through our value-added broker, Interior Investments.  Our standardized approach to furnishings provides excellent options for user fit, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability.

9) Facilities Information Technology

Maintain and Integrates cross-functional space information created by the management of drawing and research metric data. Master user and administrator of Archibus, Tableau, Webpage, Sign Agent, and Pro-Lease Software.
